GNAT 3.13 for OS/2

2001-09-18 20:03:45 -- Igor Vanin [VOICENWS, Christian Hennecke]

David Parsons has compiled GNAT 3.13 for OS/2. GNAT is the free GNU Ada 95 Translator and extends the gcc compiler so you can use it to compile programs written in Ada 95.

Ada 95 is an object oriented language with an easy-to-read syntax reminding of Pascal and Modula. It is known to be effective, easy to maintain and to provide good debugging facilities.

The package can be found at ftp://unixos2.org/incoming/gnat-3.13p-os2-bin-20010916.zip and will eventually be moved to ftp://unixos2.org/pub/os2/dev/emx+gcc/gnat/gnat-3.13p-os2-bin-20010916.zip.

IBM Java developing plans

2001-09-18 19:57:08 -- Igor Vanin [VOICENWS, Paulo Dias]

I found the following on the ibm java developer pages http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/other/portingplans.html:

"Our plans for IBM Java 1.3.1 encompass an expanded range of platforms (AIX, PowerPC 32-bit and 64-bit; zOS; AS/400; Windows 32-bit and 64-bit; Linux on 32-bit and 64-bit Intel architecture, and on 32-bit zSeries) with delivery currently scheduled for 4Q 2001. Our implementation of 1.3.1 will include our enhanced JIT compiler and garbage collection technology.

Note that, as a general rule, we will be moving away from our previous policy of making standalone Developer Kits available for individual download. Instead, our emphasis is going to be on making the latest level of Java technology available as an integrated aspect of IBM products such as WebSphere. In the case of Linux, of course, delivery will be with the various Linux distributions.

We plan to have an IBM Java 1.4 delivery on selected platforms within six months of the Sun General availability of Java 1.4. You can expect to see shipments on our chosen platforms starting within 2Q 2002."

Can anyone dig up and see if os/2 and ecs is included?

SCOUG meeting cancelled

2001-09-15 19:02:39 -- Igor Vanin [www.os2world.com, Gary Wong]

SCOUG's Sept 15th Meeting Is Cancelled.

Because of the recent events in New York and elsewhere, and resulting difficulties in trying to pull together the pieces for a first class Saturday SCOUG Anniversary meeting, the Board (at my request) has decided to cancel Saturday's meeting. We'll reschedule the anniversary party to our October SCOUG regular meeting. The multible installations of OS/2 will also be rescheduled, perhaps to November as we already have another topic set for October.

We will do our best to notify all members, and would appreciate the help of everyone in letting their SCOUG friends know about the cancellation -- receiving more than one notice is a lot better then driving to Orange for naught.

Thanks for your understanding, and see you in October.

Partition Image

2001-09-15 18:42:24 -- Igor Vanin [VOICENWS, Klaus Staedtler]

Save your disk partitions to image files.

Partition Image is a linux tool quite similar to Symantecs ghost or Powerquests Diskimage, as it supports HPFS too it might be quite useful for those OS/2 users having a Linux system installed

Description: Partition Image is a Linux/UNIX utility which saves partitions in many formats (see below) to an image file. The image file can be compressed in the GZIP/BZIP2 formats to save disk space, and split into multiple files to be copied on removable floppies (ZIP for example). The partition can be saved across the network since version 0.6.0

Supported file systems:

  • ReiserFS: a new journalized and powerful file system
  • ext2fs/ext3fs: the linux standard
  • FAT16/32: DOS & Windows file systems
  • NTFS: Windows NT and 2000 File System (experimental support)
  • JFS: Journalised File System, from IBM, used on Aix (beta support)
  • XFS: another journalized and efficient File System, from sgi, used on Irix (beta support)
  • HPFS: IBM OS/2 File System
  • HFS: Hierarchical File System: MacOS file systems (beta support)
  • We plan to support BSD file systems in the future

Partition Image is released under the GPL
