Reminder: all software news are posted to APeCS database - every week we obtain at least one new application for eComStation. List of compatible hardware is updated rarely - there was only 7 new reports in this week (notebooks, serial cards). |

UNIAUD is a generic OS/2 MMPM audio driver that supports the vast majority of audio hardware.
Development progress: New API is almost done. Now it supports multiply cards at same time, mixer capabilities and PCM read/write.

This posting is directed to current users of the Audio/Data-CD-Creator package for writing CD-R/RWs.
It's known that setting the right options for the various helper programs may be a difficult process especially for users new to CD writing. Main problem is probably finding the right driver for Cdrdao/2. To make things easier in the future I'm trying to create a database containing the necessary information so options may be set automatically when a writer is known. For this I need your help. If your CD writer (or CD-ROM, DVD writer) works with cdrecord and/or cdrdao/2 please gather the information specified below and send it to e-mail. Note that this will help you and every OS/2 user in the future so please take the few minutes.
Your privacy
Well, it's sad that today one has to state the obvious because of the ill-minded spammers out there, so here it comes:
All the information you send in will only be used for building the database and for nothing else. Your name and email address will not be included in any document or file and the sent in mail destroyed after processing.
Note that I will not answer to any of these mails so if you have any questions/ideas/whatever use the contact info contained in the Audio/Data-CD-Creator docs.
About Audio/Data-CD-Creator
ADC is a WPS integrated frontend to cdrecord, mkisofs, VIO mode grabbers and cdrdao for creating all kinds of CDs. MP3 encoding and decoding support.
Find more information here.
Gather the information
The following bits of information are necessary. You may just insert it here when replying to this posting. If you have several working devices or a dedicated CD-ROM for grabbing include the information for all of your devices by duplicating the template below.
- The name of your writer as used in advertising.
Example: AOPEN CRW9624, Ricoh MP6200, Teac CD-532-E
Your writers name:
- The features of your writer/CD-ROM. Use the following command to capture the information (be sure to adapt the dev=... setting) in a temporary file.
'cdrecord dev=x,y,z -prcap > out.txt'
- Does your writer support buffer underrun protection (burnproof/burnsave/just-link/...)?
- Does your writer need the 'Sony multisession fix'? (Setting on the General page 2)
- Additional needed options for cdrecord when writing audio CDs (if any).
- Additional needed options for cdrecord when writing data CDs (if any).
- Writer or driver selection when using cdrdao. (cdrdao/2 page 1)
Example: (driver) cdd2600, AOPEN CRW9624
Your driver:
- Additional options for cdrdao (if any). (cdrdao/2 page 1)
- Are you using cdrdao.exe coming with CD-Creator? If no please specify the release you're using.
- If you use different settings for 1:1 copy (source) please specify them here. Include everything you find on that page and the cdrdao release you're using. (cdrdao/2 page 2)
- If you use different settings for 1:1 copy (target) please specify them here. Include everything you find on that page and the cdrdao release you're using. (cdrdao/2 page 3)
- If you use mpg123 or MMIOMP3 for MP3 decoding, do you have to specify 'Swap bytes when writing'? (MP3 decoding page)
- Send the information to this e-mail (Note: remove the "DESPAM")

The os2warp.be CHL hardware list has been updated and now counts over 1600 compatible printers listed. Minor changes to the other device types have also been made. The os2warp.be CHL test team would like to thank all companies who made it possible to test this huge load of printers the past few months. |

Today, netlabs.org, the OS/2 User Group Dresden and Alexandr Cherkaev announce the beginning of a project that will create a Firewire driver for OS/2.
The goal of this project is to write an open source OS/2 IEEE 1394, or short Firewire, controller driver and mass storage layer. The initial version of the driver will support PCI attached Firewire controllers build around the VIA Technologies Inc. VT6306 chipset. A hard drive connected via a Firewire case will be supported by the sbp2 protocol. It is our intention to deliver a first version of the driver before July 2004!
This project would not exist without Netlabs! If you want to support the Firewire driver please consider sponsoring Netlabs!
More information about this project can be found at the netlabs.org FireWire project webpage;
More information about netlabs.org sponsoring is available here.

IBM has updated (1/19/2004) the OS/2 PCM Compatibility Testkit to version 4.9. This is a software package that lets personal computer hardware manufacturers (PCMs) perform self-testing to be listed in IBM's list of compatible systems. This is for testers who want to ensure that their hardware products are compatible with OS/2 Warp. Read FAQ to resolve problems.
What's new: The PCM Testkit V4.9 has been updated to support use of USB printer for the Printer Device Driver Test (PRINTDD), replacing support of MIDI files with WAV files in multimedia tests, removal of the LAN Distance and Print Service Facilities tests and the addition of a utility to detect the presence of parallel ports, serial ports, and legacy floppy drives.

GenMAC is a personal attempt of Willibald Meyer to design a device driver that offers support for a lot of recent and modern network interface cards (NICs), with a strong accent for gigabit and on-board network cards.
OS/2 uses network drivers compliant to the NDIS 2.01 specifications, a standard developed between 3COM Corporation and Microsoft. However, since the latest versions of Microsoft Windows use the newer NDIS 5.0, most manufacturers tend to lack development of OS/2-specific device drivers. This project will eventually give an answer to this problem by offering a decently-engineered and "universal" network driver with support for the most common modern network cards.
The driver properly supports Resource Manager and APM. It currently supports the following NICs: SIS 900, nForce2 MCP-T, nForce MCP-T, NS-DP83820 Gigabit, and 3Com 3C90xC (including the Mini-PCI versions).

Tame/2 1.0 GA is coming. You are welcome to new homepage of the project.
The further development of Tame/2 depends on purposeful users! The developers need either *qualified* testers with clean working systems, ideally with an alternative Linux installation too (just for comparison of debug informations). It is offered join testing of this groups of scanners:

The only way to surmount the debug stage is continue debug attempts.. This may require some days of active action and *patience*.
If you can't turn your computer room into Tame/2 test banch then you may choose the second suggestion: spend Maeda Haruyuki sample devices (at least one sample scanner for each backend). This variant is more preferable and the only working model now but requires direct investments into hardware and postal delivery.
The message is based on materials received from Klaus Staedtler and news from Jonas Buys.

Dated 2003/12/12, Dr. Martin Senftleben and os2warp.be reached an agreement concerning the future of the outdated NoteBook/2 web site, initially developped by Martin. The web site will be taken over by os2warp.be and will be given a new home at www.os2warp.be/notebook2, with the online publication during March 2004.
The old web site will be updated completely. os2warp.be intends to continue the NB/2 initialive and we hope a lot of motivated OS/2 users report their feedback or write reviews about particular notebooks and OS/2 or eCS. The old NB/2 web site will be put offline soon and will then temporarily be hosted at os2warp.be until the renewed one is finished.
